Breakfast with the Boss

Hi, I'm Ros, founder of The Sweetroots Food Company.

I never thought I'd start my own business, let alone start one while I was heavily pregnant. But Sweetroots is a complete passion project that wouldn't exist without my soon-to-be (at the time), now fully existing daughter.

So how did it all start?... Well, during my pregnancy I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes which meant I needed to entirely rethink my diet from the ground up. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s basically a form of diabetes that only affects you while pregnant. Not the world's worst diagnosis, but it meant monitoring my blood sugar after every meal and cutting out anything sugary or high carb (Basically, all my favourite stuff).

Now while I could adapt to most things, it pretty much knocked ALL my go-to-breakfast options out the window. Everything I could eat either took ages to prepare, or it was laden with sugar or excruciatingly wholesome and boring.

So I started making my own cereal. My dietician (shoutout NHS!) gave me the ultimate lifehack: stick to low GI ingredients that wouldn't spike my blood sugar, and I could still enjoy delicious carbs. After a lot of trial and error (and some truly awful batches), I stumbled on something that ticked all the boxes. And Sweetroots was born.

Fun First
Healthy Always

The very first batches, made in my kitchen while very, very pregnant.

But here's the thing. When I started testing early batches with friends and family, surprisingly I found out while the adults enjoyed it, it was their kids - my nieces, nephews, and friends' little ones couldn't get enough. And their parents kept badgering me for more, especially when they found out I was hiding extra veggies in it without the tiny humans realising.

FYI… the pink milk in the Strawberry Bakewell? It's not the strawberries doing that. It's the beetroot. Shh.

So, what started as a fix for a short-term problem actually turned out to solve a much bigger one for parents everywhere - a quick to whip up, genuinely healthy breakfast that kids actually want to eat. And that felt like too good of a secret to keep to myself.
